Campaign launched for mercury free dental amalgam

Environment and Social and Development Organisation (ESDO) has been working for
mercury (Hg) phase out from dental care sector through proposing guideline and
national policy formulation since 2010. As part of international campaign to
stop using Mercury Dental Amalgam Globally, ESDO in association with World
Alliance for Mercury Free Dentistry has initiated countrywide campaign in
Bangladesh.
In addition, ESDO has conducted research and baseline survey on mercury (Hg)
free dentistry in Bangladesh. An open
forum on 'Mercury Dental Amalgam: An Emerging Threat to Human Health and
Environment in Bangladesh' was organised by ESDO at the National Press Club on
Thursday. Special guest Charlie Brown, president of the World Alliance for
Mercury-Free Dentistry, Washington DC, United States said that USA has already
taken initiatives to ban on Hg from health care sector. He also informed that
as a developing country Bangladesh should take initiatives towards mercury free
dentistry, says a press release.

Phasing out of mercury use demanded

Speakers
at a discussion yesterday demanded a ban on the use of mercury in dental
amalgam in the country.
They
called for mass awareness and formulation of an integrated national policy to
check the use of this toxic compound in dental and health care.
Environment
and Social Development Organisation held the discussion in the capital's Jatiya
Press Club on Thursday, said a press release.
