Report on Mercury Hot-spots in Bangladesh

In 2012 our staff completed a study on country situation of mercury (Hg) sources, products and hotspots in Bangladesh. In this study ESDO identified Hg sources and products in Bangladesh, Hg consumption and emission from different sectors, Hg waste disposal system in different sectors, and people’s perception regarding Hg hazards. The report covered 9 different industries:
  • Hg use in and release from Cement industry
  • Hg use in and release from Chlor alkali factory
  • Hg use in and release from Health care sector
  • Hg use in and release from Beauty products consumption
  • Hg use in and release from Beauty product manufacturer
  • Hg use in and release from Electrical and electronics equipment
  • Hg use in and release from Jewelery
  • Hg use in and release from Parlour and saloon
  • Hg use in and release from Battery industry

Upcoming Workshop on Mercury Dental Amalgam: Threat to Human Health and Environment

On Saturday 31 August 2013, as part of our ongoing campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of mercury dental amalgam we will be hosting a workshop titled: Mercury Dental Amalgam: Threat to Human Health and Environment, Look forward toward Mercury Convention.

The event will be hosted in association with the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry (WAMFD) and we are excited to be joined by a number of distinguished guests for the event, including:
  • Chief Guest: The Honorable State Minister, Veteran Freedom Fighter, Dr. Capt.(Retd.) Mojibur Rahman Fakir, M.P.  Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
  • Special Guest: Dr. Aparup Chowdhury, Additional Secretary (Environment), Ministry of Environment and Forest-MoEF
  • Guest of Honor: Prof. Dr. Ali Asgor Moral, President, Bangladesh Dental Society
  • Guest of Honor: Dr. Labuda Sultana, Princiapl and Head, Bangladesh Dental College
The workshop will include an open discussion to be led by ESDO Chairperson, Syed Marghub Murshed, Former Secretary, Govt of Bangladesh.  Our Secretary General, Dr. Shahriar Hossain, Vice President (South Asia), World Alliance of Mercury Free Dentistry (South Asia); will present a keynote paper, sharing his experiences participating in the international negotiations for the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

No More Mercury Dental Amalgam


Campaign launched for mercury free dental amalgam

Environment and Social and Development Organisation (ESDO) has been working for mercury (Hg) phase out from dental care sector through proposing guideline and national policy formulation since 2010. As part of international campaign to stop using Mercury Dental Amalgam Globally, ESDO in association with World Alliance for Mercury Free Dentistry has initiated countrywide campaign in Bangladesh.

In addition, ESDO has conducted research and baseline survey on mercury (Hg) free dentistry in Bangladesh.  An open forum on 'Mercury Dental Amalgam: An Emerging Threat to Human Health and Environment in Bangladesh' was organised by ESDO at the National Press Club on Thursday. Special guest Charlie Brown, president of the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry, Washington DC, United States said that USA has already taken initiatives to ban on Hg from health care sector. He also informed that as a developing country Bangladesh should take initiatives towards mercury free dentistry, says a press release.

Phasing out of mercury use demanded

Speakers at a discussion yesterday demanded a ban on the use of mercury in dental amalgam in the country.
They called for mass awareness and formulation of an integrated national policy to check the use of this toxic compound in dental and health care.
Environment and Social Development Organisation held the discussion in the capital's Jatiya Press Club on Thursday, said a press release.
